We have invited a panel of great speakers exploring corporate social responsibility as it relates to a global energy corporation:

Matilde Corbacho – Legal and Commercial Manager at Parex Resources Inc.

Matilde Corbacho is the Legal and Commercial Manager of Parex Resources. Her main focus and area of practice is international oil & gas law, commercial law as well as corporate law. Matilde is a qualified lawyer in Argentina and in Canada. She holds both, a Civil Law degree from Argentina and a Masters in Law in Corporate from NYU. She practiced law in Argentina with major law firms in the areas of Corporate Law, Finance and Banking as well as Securities Laws. In Canada, she worked in Talisman as a Foreign Legal Advisor for the International Exploration and International Operations Departments. She acted as a liaison with local outside counsel on local regulatory matters, including compliance with government contracts, term extensions, and government contract amendments. Then her role changed within the same organization to Commercial Advisor where she generated new business opportunities for growing Peru into a core area for the company. She provided support to Team Leaders to help execute the country strategy and country business plans, as well as managing partner contacts to ensure the same. With 20 years of legal experience Matilde currently works as in house Legal and Commercial Manager for Parex Resources, a company with assets in Colombia.

William Laurin – External Counsel & Advisory Services at LexTerrae Resource Partners.

Mr. Laurin is a senior energy and natural resource professional with almost 25 years of private legal practice and general counsel experience specializing in Western Canadian natural resource transactions and joint ventures, including private equity funded exploration, production, infrastructure and service partnerships with indigenous communities.  He has written and presented extensively on successfully commercializing the rights and interests of indigenous communities, including “Aligning Energy Development with the Interests of Aboriginal Peoples in Canada” published in the Alberta Law Review in 2015.  He currently focuses on providing external general counsel and advisory services to private equity and pension portfolio companies.

Heidi Schubert – Senior Legal and Business Advisor at Heidi F. Schubert Strategic Legal   and Advisory Services.

Heidi Schubert is a lawyer, speaker, consultant and advisory professional. Up until its acquisition by a foreign company, Heidi was the Vice President Legal of Global Legal Services for Talisman Energy Inc. That role included the head of global litigation and member of the oversight committee of the company’s annual Corporate Social Responsibility report. She also sat as the senior legal representative on the global Health, Safety and Environment leadership team and was the chief legal adviser to the Ethics Coordinator and VP Internal Audit. For 10 years at Talisman Heidi lead a highly skilled team of specialized lawyers providing domestic (Alberta, BC, Ontario, Quebec) legal advice and strategic input to legal matters in diverse and challenging global operations including operations in US, Norway, UK, Peru, Colombia. Her team was also active in new country entries such as Papua New Guinea, Algeria, Poland, Sierra Leone and Kurdistan. They provided specialized legal advice on a wide range of issues including regulatory compliance, employment & immigration, occupational health and safety, environmental compliance, internal ethical compliance and integrity and litigation management and strategy.

Jaana Woiceshyn – Director, PhD Program at Haskayne School of Business.

Jaana Woiceshyn holds a BBA and an MBA from the Helsinki School of Economics and Business Administration (Aalto University Business School), and a PhD from the Wharton School,  University of Pennsylvania. Prior to her academic career, Jaana  was involved in operating a small business in Finland and worked for a consulting firm in Calgary . She teaches strategic management and business ethics to undergraduate, MBA and Executive MBA students at the Haskayne School, and has taught as a visiting professor in Finland and Taiwan. She has also given seminars on these subjects to various business audiences, including the Directors’ Program at Haskayne. Jaana’s research focuses on managerial cognition and decision making, including ethical decision making, and the role of innovation in firms’ strategy and performance.

Our moderator will be Michael Styczen – Partner at DLA Piper (Canada) LLP practicing corporate and commercial law in the energy sector.
