Global Lawyers of Canada (“GLC”) is a not-for-profit organization that seeks to promote a diverse and competitive legal market in Canada by representing and supporting internationally educated and globally minded legal professionals through advocacy, community engagement and professional development. It is the first of its kind in Canada, and GLC has already garnered interest from the business and legal communities. GLC’s aim is to support internationally educated lawyers that wish to practice law in Canada, and also Canadian lawyers that wish to pursue a career internationally. GLC members believe that by providing a forum for internationally trained and Canadian trained lawyers to engage, all lawyers will be able to realize the inherent value and skills that each of us can bring to the Canadian legal market, and in turn allow us to excel in global legal markets.
GLC is a much needed addition to the City of Calgary and Canada as a whole, especially in a time where the need to innovate within the legal community, business industry and economy is at an all-time high. With the ever increasing footprint of global law firms and corporate in-house departments, the value of what an internationally trained lawyer or a globally minded legal professional can bring has never been greater.
GLC was founded by three internationally trained lawyers, each coming from a different common and civil law background. They had met in 2014 in Calgary during their articling year to discuss the need for supporting and connecting internationally trained lawyers. Finding more similarities than differences in their journey to qualify as lawyers in Canada, they were eager to give back to the community. Through continued dialogue with the business industry, law firms, governmental organizations, educational institutions, non-profit associations, representatives of the legal industry and the wider community, strong support for GLC began to spread.
GLC’s inaugural launch was on November 5, 2015 in Calgary, Alberta. Our keynote speaker was Chima Nkemdirim, Q.C. and Chief of Staff to the Mayor of Calgary. Chima spoke about the importance of diversity in the industry. There were approximately 160 attendees from the business industry, legal community and the wider community.
Through continued dialogue with the business industry, law firms, governmental organizations, educational institutions, non-profit associations and representatives of the legal industry, community, strong support for GLC began to spread. Currently, we represent 150 members with over 31 nationalities represented. GLC plans to expand across Canada in the near future, and already is talking to key stakeholders in Toronto, Vancouver and Edmonton to facilitate this growth. We encourage you to ask how you can join our movement today!
